Most multi-function USB devices use a built-in USB hub to tie the various bits together. The Brother MFC-9200 all-in-one we have also has a multi-format card reader in addition to the printer/scanner/ faxmodem, and I do recall when hooking it up to a linux box that one of the devices that showed up was a USB Hub.
