Ah, but if you find a terminal that really won't wrap, you will also
find that "less"
wraps for you regardless of the terminal.   Xterm can be set to not wrap.
$ xterm +aw    # or  <ctrl><middle mouse> to get a menu, unselect Auto
Wraparound

Its behavior then is that all characters in excess of the line length
pile up on the right-most position of the line.  "less" wraps the
lines before they are sent to the screen, and "less -S" really does
chop the lines.

Other terminal emulators that I have just looked at, namely
/usr/bin/gnome-terminal, /usr/bin/konsole, and /usr/bin/rxvt do not
seem to have the "aw" option that xterm has.
