How then would I instruct yum to go do the right thing and get me a FC3

new Myth box.)

I don't think you really want a FC3 package for FC4. What you really want is a Xine package for and from FC4.

I accept the wisdom of this.

The Fedora Core distribution has dropped more and more apps with each release. This reduction has been significant in FC4 as was promised by the dev team. The reason give was so that the full distribution would still fit on only four CD's. The motivation for that is up for debate. In any case, fortunately, Xine was not one of the casualties.

Are you saying it should be on my distribution CDs? Then I should start
there methinks. Or not. What?

Good question. I left out some important details because I don't usually think about it anymore: whenever I get something to work, like yum, the memory of the pain it took to get there leaves me.

No, I don't believe that Xine is part of the CD install. However, it is in the Extras repository which is represented by the Add-ons list at

        http://stentz.freshrpms.net/

and other sites. You'll need to point Yum to an Extras repo on such a site to get the apps Fedora considers worthy of its attention.

If you've watched FreshRPMs over the life of Fedora, you've noticed that the number of "Extras" has declined to about half of what it was with RH9. I imagine part of the reason is because Redhat won't directly support anything that might contained encumbered IP (e.g. MPEGn, MP3, GIF, WMP, etc.).

Others have mentioned sites which aren't strict clones of Redhat's repositories, as FreshRPMs seems to be, and which may hold apps not on Redhat's Officially Supported (or sanctioned) list.
