I doubt SNMP is approaching obsolenscence. Maybe, however its
becoming fractured but I'm not certain about that one, maybe I've just
heard a lot of complaints. I think that I hear about SNMP often enough
and people are still looking for ways to improve it without
compromising backward compatability and all the things that seem to
happen with older standards etc.
     If you check this page
http://www.ibr.cs.tu-bs.de/projects/snmpv3/ maintained by an active
developer of SNMP, it will lead you to most of the relevant documents,
a fair list of people supporting various versoins of SNMP. Can also
check the rfc editor for all the docouments if you really want to
know.
I think other than the fact that linux is often now used to make
routing platforms, and with things like sveasoft alchemy firmware
which is basically linux there's not really that much that says SNMP
is any more tied to linux than windows for example. Usually you'd be
using a "network management systm" in the parlance to control or
gather data from SNMP agents on network devices.
