They don't necessarily have to be *hot* swappable. They make chassis

cheap.

As far as I am concerned they have to be hot swappable. How am I going
to impress chicks with my big uptime if I have to shut down just to make
a backup?

Just to point out, Serial ATA is hot swappable. So, the SATA drive chassis is hot swappable with no further addition.

Also, there are some cards that support an external SATA connection. I believe that external SATA is a fairly new development, though.
