I have installed Ubuntu 5.10 on my Thinkpad to try it. An interesting
thing happened with the terminal app. and its fonts. On my Fedora
Core 3 system, I use gnome-terminal and font "Bitstream Vera Sans
Mono". This gives me distinctive letter shapes for 1l| (number one,
letter el, pipe symbol) and also for 0O (number zero, capital Oh).
The zero has a small horizontal bar in its center, the Oh is plain.
Bitstream Vera Sans Mono on the Ubuntu 5.10 gnome-terminal has the
distinctive shapes for 1l| but the zero and Oh are visually
indistinguishable one from another. The Bitstream .ttf files on the
two systems have the same checksum, so they ought to be the same. The
only thing I can think of is that gnome-terminal on the Ubuntu system
does not actually use the Bitstream files but uses something else that
claims to be Bitstream Vera Sans Mono.
Comments and helpful hints welcome.
