Neil,

Here is something I think your LUG will find interesting.

Project BlackDog Contest Begins - $50,000 Grand Prize to be Awarded

Realm Systems has announced the start of Project BlackDog, a skills
contest offering prizes in five categories, including a $50,000 grand
prize for the best application created or ported to run on BlackDog?.

BlackDog is a pocket-sized, self-contained server with a built-in
biometric reader and Debian-based Linux operating system. Unlike any
other mobile computing device, BlackDog contains its own processor,
memory and storage, and is completely powered by the USB port of a
host computer with no external power adapter required.

Complete contest rules, product information, and ordering information
can be found at www.projectblackdog.com.

Interesting- I went to the site looking for the usual catch- all entries belong to the contest runners. I was very surprised to see instead that all entries need an OSI approved license. Kudos to them on that.

It looks like an interesting device. What I'm curious about is power- I know it has the ability to channel power from USB, but does it have any type of a battery at all? Any ability to add on peripherals such as a small LCD screen? If it did, I could see huge use of this device for mobile computing.

Another thing I could see it useful for is as a mobile session saver- run your apps off of it on 1 computer, remove it, have them pop up on computer 2 when you plug it in. If it had enough of a battery to run in idle mode for 2-3 hours it would be easy to use it for that.
