If you're running Gentoo, emerge media-sound/alsa-utils and then edit
/etc/conf.d/alsasound to say this:

RESTORE_ON_START="yes"
SAVE_ON_STOP="yes"

Then 'rc-update add alsasound boot'.  '/etc/init.d/alsasound start' if you want.
