IIRC you can ALWAYS get same info from using dig command right?

So whois is obsolete like rsh and ftp? :)

Whois is basically a contact data base, its not obsolete, but it was never authoritative for DNS. This is why GSA can essentially refuse to answer whois queries that don't come from their own servers. The TLD SOA for com org net, etc hands down the owner of foo.com, and then foo.com SOA can hand down the owner of my.foo.com, and so on until you reach the SOA where the host resides.
