Ignorance is only half (or less) of the problem. The assumptions of vast numbers of newbies are founded on cruddy UI and OS design, and they want Linux to be molded into a form that fits those assumptions. Those that aren't ignorant go and write software that fits those assumptions and breaks all the best conventions of Unix. (very broad statements, I know) Security is one of those areas where the vast majority only feel hampered rather than helped -- on MS, at least. The question is whether newbies can change how they think about it, not so much whether they can accumulate knowledge about it. MVS is stretching me again as I learn a new security system (RACF). I have to humbly admit that I am doing better with this than others who know the *system* better because I understand the *importance* of it, while some still are only annoyed &/or intimidated by it.
