With handheld GPS everywhere seems like mapping data would be easy to
generate these days.
Actually it's the opposite.
Digital maps are EXTREMELY hard to come by, BECOZ of the (handheld) GPS
market. They pay a LOT for those maps. It's why Garmin (for example) is
ruthless in prosecuting anyone who releases information on their
encryption scheme (XOR 0x55 - come get me you bastards !) becoz if their
maps get out "into the wild", they've lost that money. There is some
Windows software that will allow you to create your own maps (which is a
lot easier now with maps.google.com) but it's a fair bit of work. And
DEKODE is the name of some software that decrypts Garmin's maps.
