Right idea, wrong printer.  The JetDirect 6xxN series are plug-in
drawer modules for various laser printers, the generation that
replaced the LaserJet 4 and 5 series.  And yes they are expensive. 
The BusinesJet 1200 series does not use an externally pluggable
module, it looks like the whole network adapter is built onto the rear
panel of the printer.  The less-featured printer has a rear panel with
a dummy hole for the RJ45 connector.  I haven't looked inside to see
whether there is a mounting provision for another circuit board to go
with it.
