It is weird that Linux world has not embraced an IDE and still

I'm wondering if Eclipse IDE is the future and I should get on the train now.

IIRC the source is JAVA, can it run on an open source implementation
of Java yet? (No Sun SDK stuff wanted.)

Is it so cool I should give up on Emacs?
(I need some new fun and Vim doesn't turn me on.)

I heard it does Python too! Well?

Just as an aside here.

I was recently in need of an IDE for Java (short story - I somehow broke my commercial IDE so was looking for a quick fix). I don't know what led me to it, but I went to Sun's web site and found that they are giving away their three (3) IDEs just for joining the SDN (Sun Developers Network). Joining was simple and required no address, phone number, etc.

Here's the link:

I've D/L, installed, and used Java Studio Creator ($99), and Java Studio Enterprise ($1,895). I plan to D/L and try Sun Studio ($2,995) as well. They all run on Linux and Windows. Studio Enterprise has thus far worked great and gave me the ability to build an entire interface for my current project yesterday from scratch, including all the Javadoc documentation to go with it. In fact, unlike other IDEs I've used (both Linux and Windows), I was able to use it all day - more than 12 hours - with not a single cough, choke, or crash from it.

I haven't tried Eclipse yet, but I figured I'd get the free commercial (hmmm, what a concept) stuff while the getting was good (and I figure there might be others here who'd like them as well).
