I've had very good luck with them, but I usually keep them in
disk storage boxes or ziplock bags.  In the latter case I try
not to stack things on them.  _If_ you can tolerate treating
them almost like ultra low capacity hard drives, maybe they
aren't so bad.  I wonder whether a few of your students
had consistently good results with floppies and whether a
few others had trouble with USB storage too.  All the same,
I have to admit you were right telling them it wasn't worth it.
The students are probably too variable and the disks a bit too fussy.
