Actually quite handy (on a good day!)... My Pops taught me way, way back...

Exactly... But also exactly true that it would be a bear to take all
those parts packed in there out and back...

I went to Fry's just to hear what they had to say since I bought it
there (I used Knoppix way back in early 2003 to narrow down this exact
brand and model) and at Fry's it says right on their "Authorized
Repair Facility" board that they service my laptop brand. So I stand
in line (not too bad today) and I get to the counter and I describe
the problem... The guy doesn't even hesitate... He goes to the back
and gets a business card for "The Portable Source" over on Clairmount
Mesa Blvd.

The Portable Source guy I talked to said they could get the solder
work you describe above done for $195 with a turn around of @2 weeks.
They send about 2 units up to a guy in Spring Valley to do that sort
of power supply solder work each week.

Just a note, we grilled the guy at TPS and he was quite honest in
saying that it in fact is possible to find someone that would do the
work for right around $150 if you hunted a bit. I'm going to let them
handle it in my support the local vendor mode today...

Now if I can just get Lan not to kick me off the CB list...
