Where does one learn to use phrases like "vertical apps"? Where does

come into it? Is this really a legitimate descriptive phrase describing
a particular class of software? Why don't we just say "industry
specific"? That is a whole lot more descriptive. I have a feeling I
don't read the right PHB magazines so I have fallen way behind in
buzzword bingo.
The term vertical app comes from looking at the software as if it were
in layers (think OSI model). Each layer talks to the layer above and
below it which provides some specific functionality, but in the case of
a vertical app the layers are all proprietary and not really useful for
anything else except their specially designed function.
I know this because I once worked with a vertical app (US Customshouse
Brokerage software) and read things like Informationweek magazine.
