OK.  Firefox keyboard shortcut:
double-click on search word to highlight it.
ctrl-f to use highlighted word as "find" target
ctrl-g to find the next occurrence.

I didn't know this until just a few minutes ago, but thought that
something of the kind should exist, and tried Firefox help -- keyboard
shortcuts.  You still have to use both mouse and keyboard, but you
don't have to mouse around to other parts of the screen.
