What are the tools and front ends for creating straight, playable, mp3 CDs?
A regular data cd with mp3 files on it should work. Some players (especially older ones) may have restrictions on file hierarchy. ID3 support still isn't in all players, and good song navigation has been an issue. Also, many players do not support fast forward and rewind through mp3 songs.
I would recommend burning a mp3 cd and bringing it into the store to try out various players on display.
As for tools to use, you can use anything that can make data CDs. mkisofs + cdrecord, or k3b, for example.
