I am creating a user/group (sane/sane) for SANE so that we can access our scanner from the network.

Why is it recommended (at least by RH and Fedora distros) that one not create new users or groups with UID/GID less than 500?

Presumably so that packages that assume that they can create an account
can do so simply by using a fixed UID/GID in the 100-500 range.

Thanks. That's what I figured: An app or service (or the distro, e.g. Redhat) can arbitrarily set a UID/GID without worrying about stomping on a user account.
