For two years at the university, I used Open Office. Got an A on every presentation every week. Many presentations were collaborative with other students who used Power Point and sharing files/slides between us was no more of a problem than sharing files/slides between versions of Power Point (Note: M$ Power point is *NOT* 100% compatible with itself on different computers, let alone different versions. So anyone that says there are compatibility issues between Open Office and M$ Office and therefore you shouldn't use Open Office has not used M$ Office much.)
For diagrams, I used a myriad of applications from Kivio to Dia to Xfig. Pictures I'd use The GIMP. Spreadsheets and text, Open Office. Photos (from camera) gphoto or whatever app your camera works with.
