I spoke too soon. It worked once beautifully and then went away to hide. I'm back on eth0. At least that kind of rules out HW problems. The card is a D-Link 108G (DWL-G650). It was a little pricey for this PC ($60+ IIRC), but I decided to go up so as not to regret it. I think I'm on the trail of correctly configuring it.
