From the pattern of which files were recoverable and which were not. Lenghty 
process which took me 9 days. If you'd seen it, you would have known what I 
mean.
When which data got to disk and what's on which partition, partition table 
entirely unreadable, noise when accessing certain areas and so on and so on. 

But anyway: it took days to revoer the data (hail to Stellar Phoenix) and 
about 30% was lost, still it passed the SMART tests.
