IP is used for addressing individual nodes. I am not
sure how Solaris handles the routing and addressing.
The TCP portion is not used to reduce overhead. I
believe there was some talk of encrypting all
communications in the Sparc servers. IBM is currently
doing this with their T-Rex Z-Series mainframes.
