I would prefer not to use places like the piratebay.org but I have no clue about how to become a member of a private tracker community. Any tips? Is it best to just start your own?

Poke around on forums that have stuff you are interested in.

SomethingAwful used to have a bunch of trackers, but have since removed all of them.

Generally, you need to be on a forum for a bit and contribute something useful before someone will generally send you an invite. This is, after all, the purpose of them being *private* trackers.

Most of the newer private trackers have very strict, "no talking about the tracker" policies.
