Laptop fans normally ARE "wimpier" than desktop fans. Plus, there is very little space in there to move air. Some laptops run hotter than others and are more vulnerable to burning out their fans.
You need to determine -empirically- how hot your laptop runs when it's left on all that time, and how often it runs its fan. If the fan runs more than half the time, I would either not leave it on, or get one of those laptop cooler plates to pull heat from it.
