I'm wondering if someone can explain why the useful ability to manually
manipulate mimetypes is not readily available in Firefox Extensions:

(Or search on "mime" or "mime type" in extensions)
But this extension to change/add mimetypes does exist but is unreferenced at
the Firefox site (and almost invisible in a Google search):

I'm trying to look at this from the POV of someone that is either a non-tech
person who could benefit from using/switching to Firefox or a person who
objects to using Firefox because something like this is not readily available
as it may be in a browser with which they are more familiar.
Before I tracked this down I found all sorts of info involving editing the
mimeTypes.rdf file and so forth which is beneath useless in this context.
Maybe someone can bring me up to speed on the way Firefox looks at how the end
user is supposed to handle situations like this.

Deke,
Actually that is where the "problem" is in that there is not a "new"
definition for the handling of a "type". I run across the problem of a
"type" being handled/captured by a plug-in for example. I believe I have
had to end up deleting the entry for the plugin or app that handles
completely and then start over redefining everything about the
app/plugin to "type" setup (That's how I got "DOC" associated with
"oowriter" and "PPT" associated with "ooimpress").
Anyway it is a counter-intuitive pain which only seems to pop up when
you need to run something right now or you want to play around with
different apps handling different types especially for poorly supported
(read MS Types) types under Linux. When I have done the delete and
restore dance I have been surprised that some do work under MPlayer
(http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/info.html). In addition my FC4/Firefox
wanted to run Kaffiene, which a lot of people love, automatically. Well
that wasn't very good for me because Kaffiene wants to spawn each time
it is used which I found out the hard way. MPlayer plays much nicer. In
addition for a lot of audio I just want XMMS to run. I had several apps
running different audio when you went for a link in Firefox and that
wasn't working for me either.
From what I gather this is just the way it is... Which is OK by me
(Linux cross bearer that I am) as an answer to my original query
wondering if this really is just the way it is or if I was missing
something about usability and having direct control over the environment.
Thanks for the reply!
