At this stage, yes. Usually, there is a certain order you have to
upgrade packages. Things like dpkg, and aptitude being the first couple.
Also, aptitude is still recommended over apt-get.

More of the same, but far, far, far worse.

Yes. That is always the case.

If you think stable -> testing is hard, try going from testing ->
stable. That usually requires a complete re-install from scratch.
