This is a reminder that the elections for the San Diego Computer Society
(SDCS) will take place tomorrow, 16 May 2006 at 6:00pm at the San Diego
County Office of Education (SDCOE) in room 401. This is the place where
KPLUG normally meets. You can get directions from the web site
<http://www.kernel-panic.org>
In case you didn't know, KPLUG is a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the
SDCS, so you are actually a member of SDCS who happens to be interested
in Linux. There are other user groups who also fall under the SDCS
umbrella including the PC User Group, OS/2 User group and the South Bay
User Group.
This election is going to be extremely important to the future of KPLUG.
The current structure of SDCS is like that of a holding company. Each of
the SIGs goes off and does their own thing, while the SDCS does the
taxes, pays for insurance, and makes sure we stay a 501(c)(3) non-profit
group. Right now that is all it does. The total annual cost of all this
is about $800-$1000/year. The $6/year you pay in membership goes toward
this expense. It also turns out the SDCS treasury has about $18,000 in
it. Even if we collected no dues at all, we could go for about 18-20
years with frugal expenditures and maybe much longer depending on
interest rates.
There are some people who see this pile of money and believe that it
should be spent and that the relationship of the SDCS and its SIGs
should be changed. There are others who think things are working fine
the way the are. I personally am one of those people in the latter group.
Regardless of your view on this, I urge you to Please, PLEASE come out
and vote. You must be there in person in order to vote. I will be at the
meeting and have the membership list with me. If you are not a current
member, I can sign you up on the spot and give you an IOU for your
raffle tickets good at any future meeting :)
