Because you are one of those weird people who do strange and unusual
things like use command lines on other systems on the Intarweb.

Note that this particular Netgear product has a configurable timeout
when using PPPOE.
But apparently not if just a "normal" straight DHCP connection.

Netgear's market is people who spend all day editing their MySpace pages
and chatting on IM. These things require many very short lived
connections such that this problem does not affect them. I supposed that
by setting the NAT table timeout relatively low they can get by with
less RAM. I heard that less RAM was one of the reasons they dropped
Linux in favor of some other embedded OS on the majority of the WRT54G's
they sell. It is a cost saving measure. Now you have to buy a special
version of the WRT54G which presumably costs more if you want one that
runs Linux.

The WRT54G is Linksys not Netgear. Just in case that makes a difference.
