You probably hosed the inverter. The backlight for LCD screens is a
fluorescent tube of sorts. It needs both a positive and negative voltage
relative to ground to operate. They're fickle parts.

Now this I can't help you with -- blame your window manager or X or

It probably won't dry out and work :\ What I'd do is haunt ebay for an
inverter for your model laptop. At least then you can replace that.
Depending on the unit, inverter replacement can be relatively easy, or
more pain in the ass than it's worth. It all depends on the unit, sadly
:(  It's always worth a shot. If it turns out to be too difficult to
fix, you can always buy a new laptop.

When something like this happened to my daughter's laptop, she ended
up transplanting the hard drive and the optical drive and the RAM to
another (used) laptop of the same type.
