If hard locking, then I'd bet on bad RAM.

Sorry I mean it becomes unusable, but if you wait long enough you are able to 
reboot it.

Can you run top to see what is eating your CPU cycles? Also how much memory is being used?

Can you get a process list when it gets sluggish to see what else is going on?
