On the receiving client-end just check out the headers
(in thunderbird, eg, CTRL-U shows _all_)

Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit
For better or worse, mostly worse, Google gmail defaults to a
"helvetica" type font for displaying received mail. Only by checking
"more options -> show original" can I see things in fixed-width font.
Also helvetica for displaying composed outgoing mail. I have not yet
found any way to change this.
