My parents are still time-limited, on account of having 20 hours/month
for dialup, which is sufficient for 'em download their email, hang up,
respond, call back, upload their responses, and hang up again. They
don't use their 20 hours/month, most months.
I had several dial up accounts there were unlimited, pacbell, netcom (both
shell and slpp) and CTSNet. But, if I did stay on too long, CTSNet and
Netcom sent me nasty emails...and kicked me off. I can understand some
people not wanting to pay for unlimited time...like your parents.
Common high-scores tables to tend to generate a sense of community,
don't they?
The door games were fun...They spawned local get-togethers and you actually
got to meet the other users and Sysops that you chatted with on the BBSs. I
had a user, that by himself, playing Falcons Eye (Interplanetary) could wipe
out mulitple BBSs with many users playing...We creamed every BBS in the
South Bay and he was playing solo. My BBS always got annihilated in BRE,
but we did better with LORDNet. I miss those days...it was fun...not that I
don't like the way things are now...but you're right about community...it
was all that...It was also a kick when we first could get usenet messages
and internet email, a lot of people weren't on the net then...it was
something.
I also had my own message/file/game net...it was a hoot to run...Trying to
convince BBSs to pick it up, working on files to distribute, advertising on
other message nets and chatting with Sysops from all over the country...good
times.
