I was seeing a slowdown in opera and konqueror, too. It correlated with
  <div style="height:1px">..lotsoflinks..
stuff that seems to be of use to somebody -- perhaps, just as a
repository/sharing mechanism?

As soon as I edited out the inserted junk, the browsers started working
much faster!
