The cp command also seemed to crap out on either very large files or

what is it, a samba filesystem? you may need the largefile mount option.
That's only a 31MiB file, that's not "large"
Gotta be > 2GiB to be "large"
Well, it would certainly be large if it was larger than any buffer meant
to hold it.
