If, like my system, an apt-get update now takes 3 or 4 times as long to complete, you can use the following to turn it off.
apt-get update -o Acquire::PDiffs=false -ajb -- [email protected] http://www.kernel-panic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/kplug-list
