Application configuration and environments keep
getting more and more complex. Just setting up a
LAMP environment for say SugarCRM gets to be a
chore that requires quite a lot of specialized knowledge.

One solution is just to go the hosting route, e.g. for
SugarCRM go with an ASP like
http://www.iradeon.com/ or
http://www.rpstechnology.com/?src=gsugarhost or
http://www.siteground.com/sugarcrm-hosting.htm

Another approach is to grab a "virtual appliance" image
as a starting point. I had not seen this before but VMWare
is pushing

Virtual Appliances

A virtual appliance is a fully pre-installed and pre-configured
application and operating system environment that runs on
any standard x86 desktop or server in a self-contained,
isolated environment known as a virtual machine. Virtual
appliances provide an evolutionary step in the software
distribution model.
