Well. Out of curiosity I compiled 2.6.17.9 and didn't bother installing udev 
at all.
I'm typing this right now with this kernel. Modules built alright, hardware is 
all there, even the USB DVB-T module works... 
I seriously can't see anything that doesn't work.
Am I missing something?
