Well put. In 1983 it was an open question whether copying TV shows
in your own home for private use was illegal. Similar stories before
that for paper copiers, cable TV, recorded music and player pianos.

Time and time again US has struck a *balance* between competing
interests striving for fairness for both sides.

A better question than, "Is downloading illegal" would be...
"How can we allow downloading while still being fair to musicians, fans
and everyone else involved?"
