I seem to have misinterpreted your original question.
You seem to want to extract the text from the rtf format file. Why don't
you just open it with a wordprocessor like abiword or ooffice, and save
it as text?
If you need a script/commandline method, then unrtf has been mentioned,
which might do the job.
The iconv I mentioned was for converting the character set encoding --
evidently that's not what you want/need.
