John,
I agree with Tad and Joshua's comments entirely. I am a fan of the 3Ware
cards.
I have 40 or 50 3Ware cards, never had one fail. The RAID funcationality
works in every OS I have tried it in (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Debian, CentOS/RHEL,
Fedora, RH9, Ubuntu). The web-based Manager software doesn't work straight out
of the box on some (ie: it works in FreeBSD 5.x but not in 6.1 without work).
It worls great on CentOS/RHEL/RH9... which I use these on most. It's still
gonna tell ya there is a dead disk in /var/log/messages file, even without the
manager SW. The Manager SW also lets you config it to send eamil alerts on
errors, rebuilds, etc.
My experience pertains only to the 8000 series cards, and mostly the 2-port
units. I have been using them for about 4yrs now. My only experience
with their
support was years ago and was excellent. They have since been bought or
changed
names, I don't know if that has had any effect on the support.

I'm looking to buy a JBOD and am mulling over the RAID card... 3Ware
9590SE-16ML vs. Adaptec 21610SA
Any input?
