Well, yes and no. As the OP, I did discover, with everyone's help, that
if a column is marked as cells and defined as text _before_ any data
entry, then it sorts nicely. However in my experiments, if this is done
_after_ numeric data entry, it's too late for the whole column.

So functions like this aren't useless, because someone might want this
kind of sort after much data entry.
