I do a lot of physical construction, wood butchery, boats,
sheds, etc. Mostly crude. It is far easier to put a nail or
screw in the middle of a panel, then another in the middle
of the halves, etc. then to futz with a ruler ... etc.

There is huge amout of work where excess precison is just
a waste of time. But then I am not and have no desire to
be a craftsman.

Let me be contrary again.

The most accurate woodworkers I know tend to avoid rulers.

They may start out with accurate ruler-based measurements, but, after that, they work by transferring actual traces of cuts from board to board with scribe and straightedge rather than using a ruler.

Not only is it more accurate, it's *faster*. I wish I could make dovetails like they do.

Measurement does not always imply a ruler.
