They always work well.... once you remember the goal is to make you
dance on someone else's strings.

Excellent metaphor/analogy/whatever-it's-called.

Though infamous they are, I've never actually had interoperability
problems with Microsoft software. The disclaimer is that I've only
used more recent versions, i.e. 2000 onwards. But all the real
problems I've had with program interoperability in Microsoft products
has been from (what I perceive as) problems in the product itself, not
just problems that it has interacting with any given program.

And since this is a Linux mailing list, I'd like to mention the
problem I have with mail portability in Linux email clients. I just
can't seem to find the Linux way of complete ease when it comes to
email. What the hell is this mess that Evolution drops on my
filesystem?? And why can't I simply point Thunderbird to my previous
Evolution directory structure and automagically have all my emails
show up (and, in a fantasy world, classified and organized) in
Thunderbird? I would love it if all Linux email programs used *one*
*single* *common* email folder and format. If they want to add extra
info have them do it in a separate, overlay, directory. Why is this
not the way it is?????????????
