I should use a crossover for this? Normal output port on D-Link to special
input port on switch needs a crossover? Then could I use a straight from
normal to normal?

You should be able to troubleshoot at this level by looking at the
link lights on the router and the switch. You need an odd number of
crossovers. There may be one in the switch uplink port, there may be
one in the connecting cable. Two is not an odd number. :-)

... and all of mine have an input port with a neat little stenciled box
around it.
           coax              cat5                   cat5s
Internet <---> cable_modem <---> d-link (spec port in) <--|--> reg ports out
                                                       <--|-->

Can't poke around for set up until I get home. I don't like to have router
admin open to the outside.

Just to draw another diagram, how we set up at TTBookstore for the
October InstallFest:

Original setup:

internet <--> public_access_computer

Modified for InstallFest:

internet <--> switch <--> KPLUG_WAP/switch <--> switch <--> lots of computers
                |                    |
                |                    |
                |                    |
                |                    +-> switch <--> lots more computers
                |
                +-> public_access_computer

Drawing laid out with a fixed-width font. Shows how we created a
local network without disturbing the bookstore's public access
computer.
