Mainly, I want to a) sometimes see what's taking how much CPU/memory,
and 2) kill a process without opening a terminal window and looking
for the process and kill pid.
Run top(1) in a command-line window. It does everything you have
asked for, except for the GUI trimmings.
You could keep this running in an alternate console window.
