Great. I'm about to embark on a switch to Ubuntu, away from the
familiar shores of Gentoo. Maybe I can benefit from advice given to
you.
Except that you probably already have the lead of speaking a little apt.

Un uh. <gratuitious self-revelation> I be a data base guy, and not a very
advanced one at that. I am as aware of my Linux limitations as I am proud
of my (meager) achievements.
This Debian thing may just plain kill me. I don't even know where to add
my favorite bash aliases. I have no idea how to switch off DHCP and go to
a static IP. I _thought_ I took care of that during the installation, but
apparently it didn't take.
It's like week 1 in Red Hat 4.0. Ah, sweet youth ... until you have to
relive it!
Anyway, glad the thread suits your needs, too. But I suspect there is an
installfest or two in my immediate future.
Maybe KnoppMyth is a little too awkward to be customizing. In case you
missed it, there is an all-in-one distribution based on Fedora Core 5.
