This is just an aside, but I think there is a some difference between
acquiesce and quiesce. I suppose if your disks seem temperamental, the
meanings might be equivalent.

My understanding of the word was:

"To rest without opposition or discontent." (gcide 0.48)

USB storage devices, especially disk conversions, become angry if you poke at them too soon and often times won't go to a usable state unless you let them settle first. They indeed are temperamental little bastards. :)
