You're absolutely right - I started out there[1] and even got a terse
reply from Jerry Carter but surprisingly no real answers. I realized
today that my original inquiry was possibly technically misguided and
instead boiled my question down to the form of "Here's what I want to
do - help me do it" that would be friendlier to other forums and
lists such as this one. With the millions of AD installations and
millions of Samba installations out there, I have to figure that
there's some sysadmin who is doing this. I just need to find him and
get some insight into how. :)
The samba list used to be kind of lengthy, but in digest form, it
wasn't
too bad.
I've been subscribed for a week or so and have been surprised at the
lack of traffic... at least in comparison to what I'd expect from
such a large OSS project. I think the reason is that Samba *just
works* most of the time and it happily churns away in the background
of most datacenters. It doesn't require a mailing list subscription
just to keep up with new features and best practices.
I still have hope for a reply from the Samba list though. Jerry's
first response to me took a couple days, and I'm sure he's a busy
guy. Hopefully this weekend my inquiries will bear fruit.
