Admittedly, I thought of stat. I did no further research on that. My thoughts were limited to ``I could use stat, but then I'd have to parse the output, and parsing ls is far easier.'' I tend to avoid stat, as I have found it missing on a lot of systems. The counter argument that I can think of is that a system that has GNU ls is likely to have stat also. I had no idea about the --format option to stat. As effect of general stat avoidance, I guess.
